Lex Curry, LCSW

Hey there, I’m Lex. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and trauma therapist based in New York City. I’m queer, transgender, chronically ill, and autistic. I specialize in working with folks with stigmatized behaviors and identities, or who are otherwise mistreated and ignored in traditional mental health settings.
If you’re learning to safely unmask your neurodivergent self, exploring your gender identity or sexuality, examining your substance use, or navigating non-traditional relationship structures like ethical non monogamy, polyamory, BDSM, or queerplatonic dynamics, I’d love to work with you!
My therapeutic approach is, above all else, strengths-based and person-centered. You are the expert in your own experience and what you need. You can expect our first few sessions to focus on: 1) clarifying what you’d like to get out of therapy; 2) mapping out your strengths, ways of coping, and support system, and; 3) identifying what you need to confidently move forward in treatment. How we achieve these objectives together is up to you – I enjoy using art projects, meditation, body-work, and color coded check lists.
My special interests include HIV/AIDS activism, plants, animals, slime ASMR, and many types of art.

Curry’s Professional Bio
Lex Curry (they/he) has worked in harm reduction and trauma-informed care for over ten years.
Their professional journey began as a peer advocate at Skidmore College, educating their campus community about consent and sexual pleasure, handing out lots of condoms and lube, and supporting survivors of intimate partner violence. Lex soon moved to New York City to fulfill their lifelong dream of working in international human rights, and collaborated with a wide range of sexual and reproductive justice NGOs to protect access to safe, legal abortion services worldwide. They had the privilege of working with several veteran members of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), and learned the importance of grassroots organizing, direct action, and unabashed queerness.
They enrolled at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service with the intention of honing their skills as a macro-level social worker and researcher. To Lex’s great surprise, however, they loved mental health counseling. They completed a specialized clinical social work program in trauma-focused treatment, including an internship with the Stress, Trauma, and Resilience team at the NYU Langone Child Study Center.
Lex dove straight into HIV/AIDS care and prevention work after graduate school, and has been providing individual and group therapy in community mental health settings ever since. They’ve spearheaded several initiatives focused on shame and stigma reduction, HIV post-test counseling, immediate initiation of antiretroviral treatment (iART), and trauma-informed care.
Lex has training in a range of treatment modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Trauma Systems Therapy (TST), motivational interviewing, Seeking Safety, and harm reduction psychotherapy.
